Week 16: Villain – Zac Goldsmith

by Ray_North on April 25, 2016

Tory_cuts_villainLast week’s Villain of the week award went to Tory Mayoral Candidate, Zac Goldsmith.

Zac Goldsmith was billed as the clean cut, attractive face of modern Toryism: young, popular, charming, intelligent, seemingly normal and cosmopolitan. Indeed, he once triumphed, or appeared to, a breed of enviro-friendly Conservatism, something that kind of went the same way as the Sinclair C5. Tories hoped that he would be a nice easy on the eye and un-controversial candidate to succeed in one of the Country’s more liberal areas – London.

How wrong we all were.

Goldsmith’s campaign is being ‘advised’ by Lynton Crosby, and, as a result of that, his campaign has taken a nasty turn to the Trump-like right. His rival, Labour’s Sajid Khan, happens to be a Muslim. There is no evidence whatsoever, to suggest that Khan has ever held, been interested in, or espoused any views that are racially, culturally, religiously or politically inflammatory – however, this hasn’t stopped Goldsmith’s campaign from engaging in the worst kind of dog-whistle politics in which he has tried to firmly establish into the minds of the electorate the falsehood that Khan is some kind of extremist. It’s racist, because it is the worst kind of racial stereotype.

And it doesn’t end there, for the ‘charming, eco-friendly’ Goldsmith in the last month, his campaign has also engaged in another kind of racial stereotyping with the deliberate targeting of mail-shots to various ethnic groups, all subtly different and designed to address particular feelings of vulnerability in the most negative way imaginable – you see for the Tories, we should be all different, compartmentalised according to class or race.

I’m not a Londoner, I won’t get a vote, but I sincerely hope that after the years of Boris Johnson, the good people of London reject the latest villain offered by the Tories and elect Mr Khan.

What is Kham being asked to promise when he takes his campaign into the mosques?

How many of London’s Muslims are Wahhabis? Islam is compatible with Western culture and secular values; Wahhabism isn’t.
