Week 9: Hero – Vincente Fox

by George_East on March 13, 2016

The belated Hero of the Week Award for a fortnight ago goes to former Mexican President, Vincente Fox for telling it like it is about Donald Trump

hero_icon2The Donald Trump phenomenon gets ever more scary, as the candidate once dismissed as a joke seems inexorably now to be headed for the Republican nomination for President, over the dead bodies of the GOP establishment.   Trump’s fascistic rhetoric directed at immigrants, women and the disabled, and incitement to violence amongst his supporters against those who oppose him (even saying he’d pay the legal bills of anyone arrested for ‘taking out’ those protesting) is something that we had naively thought had been confined to the history books half a century ago with the victory of the civil rights movement.

The reaction of much of the media and other politicians has been a combination of bemusement (treating Trump and his followers as freak shows) and mealy mouthed faux outrage (Rubio and Kasich condemning Trump but saying that they would still support him if he is the party’s nominee come the summer).

One person though who has confronted the horror of the Trump candidacy head on is former Mexican President Vincente Fox. In reaction to Trump’s proposal that a wall be built along the US/Mexico border and that Mexico pay for that wall, Fox told Spanish language media that ‘we aren’t going to pay for that fucking wall’. When CNN picked up on the f-bomb (as usual with the media it’s a swear word rather than the policy itself which is the story), Fox the next day said:

Today, he’s going to take that nation (U.S.) back to the old days of conflict, war and everything. I mean, he reminds me of Hitler. That’s the way he started speaking. He has offended Mexico, Mexicans, and immigrants. He has offended the Pope. He has offended the Chinese. He’s offended everybody.”

It’s hard to argue with that. For telling it like it is, Vincente Fox is the Hero of the Week.
