Our villain of the week award goes to Filipino world champion boxer and politician, Manny Pacquiao, for repeating his opposition to homosexuality and for stating that gay people were “worse than animals”.

Manny Pacquiao may be one of the all time great boxers, but he is not much of a role model. His bigoted views on homosexuality are like a throwback to the dark ages of open homophobia. Hearteningly, the world in 2016 has moved towards a more open, diverse and a less discriminatory place to live in. But occasionally the idiots get an opportunity to communicate some pretty oafish derogatory comments such as animals being superior to gays “because they can distinguish male from female.”

Nike at least, did the right thing and dropped Pacquiao from his contract. Within hours, however, Pacquiao doubled-down on his abhorrent views on homosexuality by posting biblical verses on his Instagram account denouncing homosexuality by death.

Pacquiao may have found worldwide respect in the boxing ring, but his has lost worldwide respect as a man. He is a worthy winner of this week’s villain award. Bigotry is villainy personified.
