Week 1: Hero – Ben Stokes

by Charlie_East_West on January 3, 2016

Our first hero of the week for 2016 is Ben Stokes for hitting the fastest double century for England, the second fastest in history, on day two of the second Test with South Africa in Cape Town.

Stokes raced to 200 in only 163 balls to beat Ian Botham’s 220-ball record. He eventually made 258 as England added 312 within 39 overs and declared on 629-6.

England are now becoming a world class international cricket team. The team has huge potential. It is blessed with world class experienced players like Alistair Cook, Stuart Broad and Jimmy Anderson and it also has the exuberance of the next generation and in particular, Ben Stokes – who looks every inch like the next great English cricketing all rounder – in the mould of Ian Botham or Andrew Flintoff.

His knock today was absolutely fantastic – especially as it occurred within the backyard of a great team like South Africa.

I am pretty sure this will not be the high point of Stokes’ career. What we are witnessing is the start of something really special.
