Week 44: Hero – The All Blacks

by Charlie_East_West on November 1, 2015

Our heroes of the week are the New Zealand rugby team for becoming the first ever team to win back to back Rugby World Cups.

We have just witnessed the greatest ever Rugby World Cup and we have probably witnessed the greatest ever rugby team winning the Rugby World Cup.

The All Blacks are a fantastic rugby team. The men in black currently possess some of the finest rugby players of all time and quite possibly the greatest ever forward (Richie McCaw) and greatest ever back (Dan Carter). This team does everything better than anyone else. They are better at the breakdown; they are better at exploiting defensive weaknesses; they are better at tactical kicking; they run, handle and offload better than anyone else. Christ, even their strip looks better than the rest.

New Zealand are so utterly dominant at rugby, that when they occasionally get beaten, it is a huge surprise. They have only lost 3 games between 2011 and 2015 – each one is a seismic shock. They were the favourites to win this World Cup, and deservedly won the tournament by proving they are playing rugby on a different level to everyone else.

They have an almost invincible aura in global sport. Just like Roger Federer or Tiger Woods at their peak, Brazil in 1970 or the Schumacher/Ferrari era, the All Blacks are totally dominant. Their annihilation of France in the quarter finals was one of the most complete rugby performances I have ever seen from an international rugby team and it was a performance that perfectly encapsulated how rugby is played in the land of the silver fern.

The All Blacks are always good. But, even by their consistently lofty standards, this team stands taller than all of those who went before them.
