Week 23: Hero – Charlotte Church

Our hero of the week award goes to Charlotte Church for saying that she would pay 70% income tax if it meant protecting public services.

Charlotte Church has become the leader of the opposition. While Labour continue to lick their wounds and hunt for a political compass after a catastrophic election defeat, Charlotte Church has taken it upon herself to become the face of the anti-austerity movement.

She is trying to galvanise support for the People’s Assembly anti-austerity march in London on June 20th and is now consistently coming across as someone who is both passionate about what she believes in and eloquent in her understanding about why austerity isn’t working.

Many celebrities jump on a political campaign or bandwagon but lack real credibility. They simply create cynicism about whether their motives whiff of a commercial opportunity (Russell Brand and Bono spring to mind). This doesn’t seem to apply to Charlotte Church. She really does seem give a shit about this.

Some cynics like to point out that she is a millionaire, so she can’t possibly empathise. But, as she pointed out, being poor is not a prerequisite for empathy.

Good on her. More please. She would make a terrific MP.

Oh Dear!

There’s nothing stopping her from giving away 70% of her income. However, given that she seems to do sod all these days thus 70% of sod all income is sod all, perhaps she should give away 70% of her accumulated wealth?

Why the hell anybody would want to give the government more than they legally have to is beyond me.

I believe her ‘accumulated wealth’ is not inherited wealth and she has not been cocooned away in a life of privilege in a family and social circle that only value others with privilege. Therefore she has an understanding of the way most people have to strive to get anywhere in life. She is entitled to be passionate about what she sees lacking in our society, her wealth has not blinded her to the facts of this ideological austerity blitzkrieg and the miserable consequences for so many. At least she is voicing it and encouraging action.

The cynics can do one.

A great choice for hero of the week.
