#1026: 1969, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Proud Mary

Despite how the media has it, it’s not just Andy Burnham, Liz Kendall and Yvette Cooper you know.  Old beardy bicycling leftie, Jeremy Corbyn announced his Labour leadership bid today and then there is Mary Creagh.  Exactly.  I consider myself someone who follows politics reasonably closely (when I can bear to look) and I’d barely heard of her.   I certainly couldn’t have picked her out in a crowd or tell you anything she’s done or stands for.

In truth neither Jeremy Corbyn or Mary Creagh are likely to get the support of 35 MPs necessary to get on the ballot paper.  I understand why Corbyn is standing – a bit like John McConnell’s failed bid in 2007 against Gordon Brown, it is to give the old traditional hard left a voice in the debate.  They are though nothing like the force they were and in the absence of a candidate with broader reach (like Diane Abbott in 2010) just don’t have the numbers.

Mary Creagh though is a whole different kettle of fish.  I don’t want to belittle her campaign, but what is that makes her think she has what it takes by way of support or ideas to become Leader of the Opposition.   The case for the Burnham, Cooper and Kendall can be understood.  The same was true of Chuka before he dropped out, but Mary Creagh?   Is it just an ego thing?   Pride before a fall, perhaps….

A great excuse to post this, though. The CCR original is just so much better than the more frequently played Tina Turner cover.
