#1020: 2014, Hiss Golden Messenger, Mahogany Dread

This is one of those songs that has got under my skin in a way I can’t quite fully explain. Bitter-sweet, resigned but hopeful, musically quite simple but with a real warmth and depth to it. I love the voice, probably most on that opening line ‘Well I can’t go back, I know that now’. And although there’s no real connection with the lyrics, I think it’s somehow resonating with my general mood, on several levels.

And then there’s the tenderness in that beautiful last verse:

‘Girl of mine with silver in your hair
I still want you
It’s getting hard to be easy now
A couple of kids
Mahogany dread
But happy days are still ahead’

I was recently given the album it’s taken from, Lateness of Dancers, and I’m happily getting to know it. I hope you like the song. Take a few minutes out, turn it up, and see if it works…

An album that just missed out on my Top 50. Great stuff.

A bit Country for you, Bobby, but I like it. Sort of War on Drugs meets Nashville.

I’ve been won over to bits of Country for a while now.
