#1013: 2014, Catfish and the Bottlemen, Pacifier

I have recently been accused of jealousy! Yes, moi! It was suggested that one of the reasons that I have a go at Danny Alexander is because I’m jealous of his rise to a Ministerial position – ha – bollocks to that.

Catfish and the Bottlemen on the other hand, I am genuinely jealous of – truly envious, the full green eyed monster – I covet them and their fame and youth and lifestyle, I want to be them.

Why this particular band, I hear you ask – ok, they’re not bad, but they’re not massive, they’ve still a while to go before they’re slipping into their guitar shaped band in Beverley Hills.

Well, I’m jealous of Catfish and the Bottlemen because they are, like me, from Llandudno. They went to my school (albeit thirty years after me), they’ve drunk at the pubs I’ve drunk at, they probably bought their first guitars from the same place I bought my guitar. And I’m jealous because they’re actually pretty good – I mean Llandudno could easily have produced some awful boy-band monstrosity – so to see a vibrant, indie, jingly-jangly, authentic guitar band, is a real kick.

When I was sixteen my dream was to play a massive outdoor free Summer gig on the bandstand in Llandudno (I think, alas, the closest I came was 1987 New Year’s Eve, Disco and Dance at Tiffany’s Wine Bar) – I’m not sure if Catfish share my dream, but, I hope they do and if they manage it, I’ll be there, jealously watching from the front.

As you know, I share the same love for the same town as it’s my home town too.

Good luck to these boys, it’s not a bad tune, just think my tastes have evolved a little.

The name though. It’s not great, is it?. The Something & the Someone name should have been forever put out to pasture after Echo & the Bunnymen in my view. Showing my age mind.
