#1010: 2013, Courtney Barnett, Avant Gardener

by Jackie_South on April 11, 2015

I’ve just got back from seeing Courtney Barnett‘s gig with George East in Camden. Fantastic stuff. “Here’s another cover. This is by Courtney Barnett: it’s called Avant Gardener”.

What I love about this song (besides the title) is the apparent rambling lyrics setting out her anecdote about experiencing an anaphelactic shock, which you then realise are extremely tightly written. The breathlessness of the singing reflects the breathlessness she experiences: “I’m having trouble breathing in”.

I also love the that it feels so uncontrived. There are the everyday wry observations: “The yard is full of hard rubbish it’s a mess and/ I guess the neighbors must think we run a meth lab”; then there is a touching authenticness of the exchange in the ambulance: “The paramedic thinks I’m clever cos I play guitar/ I think she’s clever cos she stops people dying”.

And then I love her guitar-playing on this – with the distinctive feedback screeches. This is a woman who loves to rock out.

What’s there not to love about Courtney Barnett?
