Week 11: Prat – Jeremy Clarkson

Our prat award for this week goes to Jeremy Clarkson, who was suspended by the BBC following a “fracas” with a Top Gear producer over a lack of hot food.

Jeremy Clarkson is like marmite. You either love him or hate him. There is no doubting his success in developing the Top Gear franchise into one of the world’s most popular TV programmes. A format that is guilty pleasure entertaining but extremely boorish in equal measure.

But, with his success has come a huge amount of hubris. It was only a matter of time before Clarkson’s old school dinosaur persona would create a schism between himself and the kafkaesque bureaucracies in the BBC.

Basically, Clarkson has got to the point where he probably thought he was too big to be fired. That may well still be the case as he has the Prime Minister and the Director General of the BBC on his side, and he has a substantial intellectual rights and ownership share of the Top Gear franchise which is a huge global money spinner for the BBC.

The old adage states that you should judge a man by the company he keeps. In the case of Clarkson, this means we should judge him with low regard. He is part of that braying God-awful Chipping Norton set which includes a rogues gallery of the establishment – David Cameron, Rebecca Brooks et al.

These are the sort of people who appear to think that because of their positions in power, they can get away with absolutely anything. Perhaps they can, but quite often they appear to be sailing pretty bloody close to the wind.

Who knows how this latest scrape will play out with Jeremy Clarkson. The cynical part of me thinks that this is just a dark PR stunt that will provide a huge ratings boost when Clarkson finally reappears on Top Gear. Alternatively, the BBC might just their heels in and Clarkson gets fired. Either way, he will come up smelling of roses – probably on Sky 1, with a rebooted version of Top Gear.

Clarkson has an enormous fan base – as the signatures to the petition to bring him back testify. But this still doesn’t stop him from deservedly winning our prat award this week. No one is above being criticised for bad behaviour – especially Jeremy Clarkson.

Clarkson reported himself for this and nobody has complained. He should be reinstated and finish the series at the minimum. Most of the segments have already been filmed and paid for,

I know lefties don`t like Clarkson because he doesn`t parrot alleged truths about the environment or gender.

In most workplaces, anyone who punches a fellow employee would be immediately fired from their job…unless they are a professional boxer.
