#989: 2014, Mark Ronson ft Bruno Mars, Uptown Funk

by Ray_North on February 18, 2015

We do like a good pop song on these pages, and this, like it or loathe it, is a stomping, foot tapping, corker.

Like all good pop songs it has its roots in various genres; like all good pop songs it’s robbed its hooks and baselines from elsewhere – this song is funk, this song is disco, this is song is playground chant, this song is R&B – it is an anthem for the X-Factor generation, it’s the song that those who ‘just wanna make it’ would love to write or perform.

Mark Ronson is a DJ and Producer – a man in his fortieth year, he has built his career on covering the work of others – his 2006 Album Version, included re-workings of songs by the Smiths, the Jam, the Kaiser Chiefs, the Zutons and others – amazingly, it didn’t offend me, in fact, I liked it quite a lot.

Amazingly, I am still not offended by Uptown Funk either – it has been played by my wife, at least twice a day, my children demand it in the car, it’s on in the pub, it’s played at every party I go to, hell, it was even played at Murrayfield on Sunday – but, as i said, amazingly, as of this minute, I still react in the way Mr Ronson would want me to – foot tapping, hips swaying, hands making the occasional air-fist grab.

As a final thought, me and Mrs North pondered for sometime whether to allow the boys to sing, ‘uptown, funk you up, uptown funk you up,’ – we initially tried to tell them that Mr Mars was singing ‘uptown, funky wunk,’ but they just didn’t buy that.

On a recent away trip with Swansea they played it at Southampton before the game and the stewards couldn’t help but sway and sing a long. It was a wonderful moment, nearly as good as Jonjo Shelvey’s winning goal! I think when they play this in twenty years time at someone’s wedding people will still love it.
