Week 2: Villain – French Islamicist Terrorists

by Jackie_South on January 11, 2015

CH_terrorist_villainThis week, our regular Villain award is bestowed on Said Kouachi, Cherif Kouachi, Amedy Coulibaly and Hayat Boumeddiene, the Islamicist terrorists who murdered twenty people in their rampage across and beyond Paris this week.

“It is characteristic of fanatics who read the holy scriptures to tell themselves: God killed, so I must kill; Abraham lied, Jacob deceived, Rachel stole: so I must steal, deceive, lie. But, wretch, you are neither Rachel, nor Jacob, nor Abraham, nor God; you are just a mad fool.” (Voltaire)

The world this week recoiled in horror as the staff of a small French magazine were murdered at their editorial meeting, followed by the death of police and hostages. Mockery was met with slaughter. No matter what the sense of exclusion of young Muslims in the Parisian suburbs, the argument that there was any justification for that slaughter is nauseating. Indeed, the vast majority french Muslims were as appalled as the rest of France by this crime.

And in case anyone still doubted that these scumbags were sociopathic racists willing to kill anyone who did not 100% prescribe to their narrow view of their faith, we had the murder and hostage-taking at the kosher grocery on Friday.

Voltaire of course is often also cited as saying “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it“. There is of course little to disapprove of in what Charlie Hebdo’s set out: a leftist magazine with cartoons mocking all religion, not just Islam. But we should still all remember that the freedom of speech is the most precious freedom of all and we should all do everything we can to defend that right.

We should never tolerate those whose intolerance leads them to believe they have the right to take the life of others. Nous sommes tous Charlie.
