Week 42: Prat – David Treddinick MP

by George_East on October 19, 2014

Con_PratThis Week’s Prat of the Week Award goes to Conservative MP for Bosworth and (extraordinarily) member of the Health Select Committee and the Science and Technology Committee, for his suggestions this week as to how the NHS should save money on Channel 4 news

In a rational world David Tredinnick would have been laughed out of office by now.    The Tory MP for Bosworth has, after all, got a lot of form for trying to sell snake oil remedies to the public.

Actually that is a little unfair to him as snake oil salesman were generally speaking aware that the ointments and tonics they were selling had zero medicinal effect.   Tredinnick, on the other hand, really seems to believe in it.  This is a man after all who charged the tax payer £755 for his purchase of astrology software and who has been a dogged defender of the prescribing of water for all kinds of ailments (or homeopathy as its practitioners like to call it because that is all that’s left once the ‘active ingredient’ is diluted to the levels that homeopathy requires).

On astrology Tredinnick has said in the House of Commons that ‘I am absolutely convinced that those who look at the map of the sky for the day they were born and receive some professional guidance will find out a lot about themselves and it will make their lives easier’.

He was at it again this week.  In an interview on Channel 4 news Tredinnick opined that 5% of the NHS budget could be saved if only the health service invested in astrology and other alternative medicine.    If only Mystic Meg was allowed into the NHS, not only would it be clinically the right thing to do but it would be cost efficient as well.

I think, Mr Treddinick, that it may well not be just the public that needs to receive some ‘professional guidance’ on astrology.

The real tragedy is that I doubt he’ll lose votes because of these opinions.
