World Cup Special #9: Ray North’s World Cup Crystal Ball

by Ray_North on June 12, 2014

Unknown-4You may scoff, but my crystal ball was pretty much on the money during the last Premier League Season, so I thought I’d get it out of my holdall, dust it down and peer inside.

Well, as avid followers will have seen, I’ve predicted the following teams will get through the group stage:

I see the last four as:

With a Brail v Argentina final
In which Brazil will prevail

England will surpass expectations and reach the Semi Finals where they will lose against Brazil.

England in the semi-final. Are you nuts?

I think England will struggle to get out of the group.

My predictions:
Winners: Argentina
Runners Up: Germany
Losing Semi-finalists: Brazil and Uruguay

England go out at the group stage

With you on golden boot – Messi.

I know, my England in the Semi prediction is mad – but here is the logic. I think that England will beat Italy on Saturday, and that they will then do well enough in the other matches to top the group. This get’s them a second round fixture against the runner up in Group C – which is likely to be Colombia, Greece or the Ivory Coast – all of whom are eminently beatable, especially if, by then England will have happened upon a formation and team that is working for them.
Victory in the last 16 takes them into a quarter final against probably Spain, Holland or Croatia – again, none of those teams will hold any fear, as Spain are ageing and will struggle in the third week of an international competition.
England, on the other hand, will now have a tonne of confidence and the exuberance of youth.
I rest my case.
Bring it on.

The happy pills are clearly kicking in in North Wales. England never beat anyone ranked higher than them in the knock out stages. I reckon they’ll get out of the group but no further than the quarters.

They have to have a go. Play Barkley, play Sterling and take it to Italy.

The difficulty is Italy is the first game. If it was the last game, I’d have more confidence. England always start slow. Italy will be their usual parsimonious self at the back and last time out Pirla looked like he was playing a different sport to the England team, so much did he dominate.
I agree if they can get out of the Group then the have the fortune of the easy Group C as the origin of the teams they are going to be facing. After that no chance. And Spain? Relly. They may be aging but they still have Iniesta and Xavi who have the capacity to utterly embarrass England.
