#904: 1982, Romeo Void, Never Say Never

by Jackie_South on June 16, 2014

This is a song I hadn’t thought about for years (possibly decades), until appearing on the soundtrack of The Wolf of Wall Street. So, I searched it out again and found the video…

A bit of San Fran post-punk, I like the fact that Romeo Void are a sort of anti-Blondie: a chubby female singer performing with a chisel-jawed male band. But Debora Iyall’s sexuality even more ballsy and full on than Debbie Harry’s:

I might like you better
If we slept together

The sax bit dates this a bit, but her musings on frustration when even tramps and pensioners are getting some is wonderfully tongue-in-cheek, as is the is-it-or-isn’t-it playing with the notion of incest (“Nursing their fathers locked inside/
They masqueraded as his bride”).

They really don’t make them like this any more.
