#903: 1996, Baddiel and Skinner and the Lightning Seeds, Three Lions

by Ray_North on June 12, 2014

After my recklessly brave prediction that England will progress to the Semi-Finals of the World Cup (remember I’m Welsh, so no sentimental gut reaction here) – I feel I have no choice but to plump for this classic piece of acceptable lad culture from a time when for a few moments it was alright to like football, drink lager and read Nuts Magazine.

I remember the 1996 Euros with great fondness – not least because I was in Zagreb (one of my favourite cities) for the first few games and came home to a London that had been completely overwhelmed by football fever.

And, this song was everywhere.

It’s aged pretty well too – it’s a good tune, genuine and warm in its sentiment and catchy enough to have remained with us for the last eighteen years. Happy memories.

Altogether now:
Everyone seems to know the score
They’ve seen it all before
They just know
They’re so sure
That England’s Gonna throw it away
Gonna blow it away
But I know they can play
‘Cause I remember…

Three Lions on a shirt
Jules Rimet still gleaming
Thirty years of hurt
Never stopped me dreaming

For a moment I thought the headline to the next article referred to the England soccer team…
