#901: 1979, The Slits, I Heard It Through the Grapevine

by Jackie_South on June 6, 2014

After having had a go at Channel 4 in the past, praise where praise is due. This evening’s Channel 4 News featured an interview with Viv Albertine, The Slits‘ guitarist and one-time girlfriend of Mick Jones.

One of the tracks played with the interview was this cover of the Marvin Gaye classic. To be honest, I’d forgotten about their version, so a big thank you to C4N for reminding me – the punk-reggae version with Ari Up’s slightly warbly, slighty pisstake-ey vocals that betray a little bit of her German accent.

Brilliant. Channel 4, all is forgiven (at least until Benefit Street or My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding return).

Viv Albertine seems to be having a bit of a renaissance. She’s brilliant in Joanna Hogg’s new film, Exhibition and her new autobiography is getting superb reviews. Must get myself a copy.
