#897: 2014, Conchita Wurst, Rise Like A Phoenix

Me and Mrs North sat down, we opened a bottle of something French and we watched the Eurovision Song Contest – every last minute of it. We watched Polish girls with their knockers out rather unsubtly singing about milking cows; we watched some French fellas sing a song about moustaches; a bloke who looked like he’d come out of the Balkan crisis of 1994 singing about peace; and some gorgeous Russian twins who got roundly booed by the audience which appeared to comprise of a load of fellas who’d gone out on a Gay Pride March and ended up in Copenhagen.

And, I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it. There was even one really good song, a strange Country and Western offering from the Netherlands, and there was this from Austria – a song which could have been a James Bond theme, sung by a fella who was dressed like a bird, but had a beard! Genius!

Conchita was amazing, a proper starlet, a true diva. His performance was incredible (his sounds not unlike David McAlmont), his voice resonating wonderfully through this really rather excellent song – and then, afterwards as he got top marks from many of Europes more regressive countries, he responded with the most engaging pout I’ve seen in ages.

Then when he won, he said simply – ‘peace and freedom’ and who could argue with that.

Go Conchita – who knows if we’ll ever hear from you again? Who knows if bearded women are about to become uber-fashionable, not in Wrexham, but perhaps in George’s Hackney. Enjoy! Don’t fight it!

I’ve mercifully yet to hear this and suspect I’ll be able to avoid it a while longer.

I do though reckon that Wrexham might have an above national average level of bearded women.

And it’s ‘phoenix’ for heaven’s sake, not ‘pheonix’. Do you ever spell check?

Geoff – you know the answer to that question. No chance.

I haven’t heard it either – I am pretty confident I can go through the rest of my life without doing so. Man’s gotta have some principles FFS.
