#866: 1969, The Jackson Five, I Want You Back

by Charlie_East_West on March 14, 2014

Welcome to the last in our series of great bass line songs. My chosen song, I Want You Back by The Jackson Five has not just one but two great bass lines.

The first Jackson 5 single to be released on the Motown label, I Want You Back features what is unarguably one of the most recognisable, and best bass lines ever in pop music. The first bass line starts the song off, and then it is layered with another bass line.

The lyrical content is hardly relevant or appropriate for a bunch of then kids in The Jackson Five to sing and lament about:-

Oh, just one more chance
To show you that I love you
Baby baby baby baby baby baby!
(I want you back)
Forget what happened then
(I want you back)
And let me live again!

Oh baby, I was blind to let you go
But now since I see you in his arms
(I want you back)
Spare me of this cause
(I want you back)
Give me back what I lost!

Oh baby, I need one more chance, hah
I tell you that I love you
Baby, oh! Baby, oh! Baby, oh!
I want you back!
I want you back!

What on earth do kids know about lost love? Anyway, the song is great and the bass line lifts it up to almost perfection.

Good choice – I was considering a Jacksons song myself.
