#839: 1995, Bikini Kill, I Like Fucking

by Ray_North on January 19, 2014

I’ve just spent the last half an hour listening to songs by bands with names like The Stiffs or Metal Heatwave with titles like – ‘Fuck Off’ and ‘Fuck Off’ – all of which seem to have a lot of energy and not many chords or if I’m going to be honest a great deal of subtlety either.

Then I came across this song by Bikini Kill – now, I’m sure I’ll be corrected if I’m wrong, but I’ve got a feeling that we once saw Bikini Kill play this live back in the day. I do remember quite liking the Grrrl Band scene that flitted around the place somewhere in between the end of grunge and the beginning of Brit Pop.

Anyway, in contrast with some of the other songs that we have celebrated in our ‘Fuck week’ – this song by Bikini Kill, does not use the ‘F’ word as an aggressive statement of defiance, but rather in its traditional Anglo Saxon, as a word for sex – and in this case, the defiance is the statement that sex and feminism are not incompatible, with the line, I believe in the radical possibilities of pleasure babe
I do. I do. I do.
putting it rather well.

Absolutely.

Have you listened to Joseph Arthur’s “The Ballad of Boogie Christ”? Or Kristin Asbjoernsen – or The Gloaming?

Compared to any of those three, this is Football Conference stuff…
