#826: 2013, Bill Callahan, Javelin Unlanding

by Charlie_East_West on December 27, 2013

If you ever wondered what the actor Donald Sutherland would sound like if he tried impersonate Leonard Cohen at a Karaoke evening – then this is it. Welcome to the wonderful world of Bill Callahan.

Bill Callahan’s recently released Dream River album has won a lot of friends. It has also made many of the best album of the year lists in the music press. Deservedly so – it makes my own top 10 album of the year list. The whole thing sounds a little like a self indulgent ode to misery. But, if misery sounds this good, then I want to listen to the miserable.

My chosen song comes from this album. It is the wonderful Javelin Unlanding. It is hardly the most upbeat song to work off any Christmas pudding still rummaging around in your belly, but, it is still an uplifting song in that weird and wonderful way that only music can provide.

A fantastic album from one of the true originals currently recording. I love his sardonic lyrics and use of repetition.
