#804: 1965, Donovan, Jersey Thursday

by Jackie_South on November 22, 2013

Day three of our days of the week themed songs, and I’ve ended up with Thursday. Thursday! What fucking songs are there about Thursday?!?

The world of music has plenty of songs about Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays: we’ve picked a couple of Sundays and a Monday before. Along with Charlie’s post, we’ve had another Tuesday. Friday shouldn’t be a problem for George tomorrow and whilst Wednesdays might be thinner fare, Ray had an obvious pick for yesterday.

Thursday is a funny old day: it isn’t the excitement of the weekend nor is it the depressing return to work of Monday. At school, our teachers dreaded Thursday afternoons as the time when the kids would be the most restless and least receptive.

As someone born on a Thursday, I quite like some of it: the local paper comes out, it’s the day of Labour Party meetings and I usually have my most enjoyable work meeting of the week on Thursday too. But those are all quite individual (and possibly bizarre)  pleasures that don’t translate well into song.

George had some sympathy with my plight and did come up with a decent suggestion I almost ran with (by Seventies’ Philadeplhian Italian-American Countyish Jim Croce).

Instead though, I discovered this track by Donovan, an artist who really ought to have featured before. It’s a great, delicate piece of folkish-pop, that perhaps foreshadows Nick Drake a few years later.

A great little find. Perhaps getting Thursday wasn’t such a bad deal after all.
