#781: 2013, Goldfrapp, Annabel

by Ray_North on October 20, 2013

I go to sleep to music. It’s something I’ve done since I was about 14, when I would wake up with my Walkman earphones wrapped around my neck and the sound of the John Peel show or whatever album I was listening to at the time still giving it large.

Now, and partly because I have to cater for Mrs North, and partly because I can’t over-excite myself at bed time, I have to be quite careful with my pre-sleep music choice. I need something that will calm me down, relax me, enable me to lose myself in the texture of gentle sound.

My favourite pre-sleep artists and albums include some of the greatest pieces of music I own - Bob Dylan’s Blood on the Tracks; Nick Drake’s Five Leaves Left; Radiohead, In Rainbows; Christian Foreshaw, Sanctuary – and others, and also Goldfrapp.

Alison Goldfrap’s voice is just so wonderful – a sleepy, sensual, sexy adventure that is best enjoyed lying in the dark next to another person.

And so, when their new album, Tales of Us was released earlier in the year, I bought it, waited for night time and played it – marvellous. And this song, in particular is just superb – it all sounds so desperate, so dark, so wonderful. It puts me to sleep. I don’t mind.

Ooh, I was listening to this earlier today while working (luckily it didn’t put me to sleep even if the papers I was reading almost did). Perhaps my favourite track on the new album. Lovely.

I am with you on the music and sleep habit. The Blue Nile is wonderful for sleep inducing listening.

I can trace my habit right back to being a small child and listening to Radio Luxembourg under the duvet.

Old habits die hard.
