Something for the Weekend: #3: The Old Fashioned

by Charlie_East_West on August 30, 2013

Something for the weekend? A stiff drink please.

It has been a tough old week for David Cameron. He probably needs a drink. It has also been a tough old week for the All That’s Left team – we have bickered all week long about the potential military intervention in Syria from America and until yesterday, Britain. Actually, it has been the toughest on poor old Ray North. He has been fighting on his own against the rest of us on the whole issue of intervention in Syria.

So this drink is for Ray and Dave. Ray – you deserve it. Dave – fuck off, go buy your own.

My weekend drink of choice, (which I will buy Ray sometime soon) is The Old Fashioned. It is also Don Draper’s drink of choice.

This whisky cocktail is an out-and-out classic of the 1960s that will make you feel like Don Draper after one glug.

1 thick slice orange peel
1 maraschino cherry, with stem
1 tsp sugar syrup
2-3 drops whisky bitters
ice cubes, as necessary
50ml/2fl oz Scotch or bourbon
twist of lemon peel, to garnish

Preparation method:
Take the orange peel and squeeze it with your fingers. Rub the peel around the insides of a whisky tumbler, then place into the glass. Add the cherry, sugar syrup and bitters, along with three ice cubes.
Add half of the scotch or bourbon and stir for about ten seconds. Add more ice and the remaining scotch or bourbon and stir again for 10-15 seconds.
To serve, garnish with a lemon peel.

Bloody marvellous.

Alternatively, what would Don Draper do? Just go to the local bar and order it and drink it quickly and then order another one and let the bad things happen. I bet Dave and Ray already have…

I am beginning to wonder if maybe our Prime Minister hasn’t had one too many of these – is he becoming, how shall I put this, a little Asquithian?
