All That’s Left is Heart of Darkness Politics

If you have foraged your way through the undergrowth of the internet jungle and found yourself at the All That’s Left destination – welcome to our Heart of Darkness. We hope you enjoy your stay.

Welcome to our political Apocalypse Now. We disciples of the political left now take our orders from Colonel Kurtz, otherwise known to us as Colonel George East and his spectacular Brando-esque portrayal of left wing opinionated tyranny. If George East is Brando/Kurtz, then I suspect that Ray North is already hamming up his manic Kurtz/East disciple portrayal of Dennis Hopper. Meanwhile, lieutenants Bobby West and Jackie South both recently admitted that they love the smell of napalm in the morning.

During your stay in All That’s Left, we sincerely hope you will become corrupted and in the course of time completely brainwashed. We want you to go native. Gradually, we have armoured ourselves against the forces of evil emanating from the right. We have steadfastly dug ourselves into very deep trenches, and we stubbornly refuse to be outflanked on the left by an increasingly hefty right wing artillery. Like Kurtz and his disciples, we have taken our pamphlets and scribbled in, at the very end, the words “Exterminate all the brutes!”

We have taken up residency on our All That’s Left habitat because all around us the right wing forces are threatening to smash all that is before them. We try to induce the native readers to follow us, setting up rituals and venerations worthy of a bunch of tyrants. So, we hide in the shadows, far far away in a little known land tucked away in the outer reaches of the internet. When we come under attack, we do not use guns, weapons or sticks and stones to defend ourselves. Instead, we only use words. By the time a right wing protagonist sees our scribes, we will be taken ill with anti-Tory jungle fever and pronounced almost dead. I expect us to be taken back down back down the river in a gin palace pleasure cruiser owned by George Osborne, and left to die on the boat with the last words, “The horror! The horror!”

Out in the wider plantations of the country, we can see the lines of attack from the right. Over the past 34 years, our green and pleasant land has been invaded by this right wing machine. It has become an occupied territory. The resistance from the left wing operation has slowly diminished. We now have the so called flag bearers of the left wing – the Labour Party being either driven out or driving themselves towards ideological surrender. The forces on the left are losing the political argument. They have been outflanked by manipulative operations from big business, right wing media and Tory politicians who have fed the public a divide and rule war of terror on the unsuspecting masses. The politics for the most have been replaced with the politics for the rich few – dressed up as a hoodwinking narrative aimed at striking fear and loathing into the majority of people in this country. The Tories are now armed to the teeth with a particularly dangerous type of narrative machine gun. In response, the traditional political opposition have meekly surrendered. The Lib Dems and Labour are currently nothing more than ideological cheese eating surrender monkeys.

So where the fuck is the résistance movement? There are still a few courageous pockets of enlightenment out there. Examples include Alex Salmond, Will Hutton, Owen Jones, John Cruddas, Margaret Hodge, Charlie Brooker, Polly Toynbee, George Galloway, Lord Oakeshott, almost the entire Scottish nation and of course, Colonel George East.

But, sadly, these enlightened individuals do not provide a collective and unifying vision for change, and as such, there is no liberal/left wing cohesion. Until such a unifying movement on the liberal left emerges to provide a sustainable alternative, the real visionaries on the left of British politics will be left to form their own Heart of Darkness micro-habitats and continually just shout from the margins – “The horror! The horror!

For a fully operational and functional democracy in the UK, we need a strong and viable alternative. British politics needs a new force on the left to counter the invading forces on the right, and to address the ongoing crisis of capitalism. A new left wing force would push radical yet sensible alternatives to the failures of the Thatcherism settlement that led to the banking crisis and subsequent misplaced austerity. It would create space for a new alternatives of political policy to be developed – which, at present, are sadly missing within the upper echelons of Westminster politics.

If a new, coherent and unified movement of the left could agree upon some key ideological templates, it would give a voice to millions, rather than being lost in a heart of darkness.

‘What are they going to say about him
He was a kind man?
He was a wise man?
That he had plans
That he had wisdom
Bullshit man’

“We train young men to drop fire on people. But their commanders won’t allow them to write “fuck” on their airplanes because it’s obscene!”
The finest words ever uttered by Colonel Kurtz.

Yep. Brando’s final moment of genius. Only shot the way he was because he turned up on set massively over weight. Sometimes it’s accidents that make great cinema. Bound to feature in Cine-East at some point.

Best line in the movie was ‘Charging a man with murder out here was like handing out speeding tickets at the Indy 500′
