#728: 2007, dan Le Sac Vs Scroobious Pip, Thou Shalt Always Kill

by Ray_North on July 29, 2013

Ok, I’ll start with a confession -I hadn’t heard this until yesterday. In fact if someone had said the words dan Le Sac V Scroobious Pip to me, I would have thought that they were talking gibberish, perhaps as a result of too many drugs (and yes it is lower case for ‘dan’).

But then I tuned into Radio 4. Yep, rock and bloody roll! Radio 4, just after The Archers – Russell Brand was on Desert Island Discs. Now, I have to say that I have a soft spot for Brand (and, indeed Desert Island Discs). I like the desperate attempts he makes to speak honestly in as pretentious way as possible – that alone, makes me laugh. I also laud his stance on drugs.

He chose some ok songs, something by Amy Winehouse, something by The Libertines (I’m seeing a theme) and then he chose this, which, as I’ve said, I hadn’t heard before. And it worked for me. Like Brand himself, it has a very simple message which was given in a very clever way. A set of rules. Culminating in the overarching rule – be yourself. Don’t let others dictate to you who you should listen to and who you should ignore – ‘The Pixies are just a band,’ dan tells us (or is it Pip? I’m fucked if I know), ‘The Smiths are just a band,’and on he goes telling me that just about all my favourite bands, are, well, no more than that, just bands. He’s right. I think. But of course, he’s also wrong – The Smiths, Pixies, Clash, Johnny Cash, The Beatles etc etc are, of course far, far, far more than just bands. But, perhaps that’s the point of the song – don’t let anyone else place these bands on your pedestal for you, discover them and so many other bands yourself.

A message for the young North boys – methinks!
