#724: 1981, The Passions, I’m In Love With A German Filmstar

by Ray_North on July 24, 2013

In another time and another place – I am on my way to the third form school disco; I’m wearing a pencil thin, black leather tie, a pair of stretch jeans and my new brilliant white trainers. Me and my mates arrive and immediately stand by the wall bars of the school gym and ponder whether to spend our pounds immediately on a can of coke and a bag of crisps or whether to wait. After a bit, there is a rumour that some of the hard lads in the fourth form are coming to ‘get us’ afterwards – we act hard like we’re not bothered, but, we are, we’re shitting ourselves.

On the dance floor there is an entirely female crowd bobbing gently to pop music. They wear the colours that defined their decade – bright reds, neon blues, lime and canary yellow.

I have a girlfriend. I know I have a girlfriend, because I asked my mate to ask her out and she said yes. She’s dancing with her friends. I am standing with mine. It is fantastically exciting. I will soon be fourteen.

This song plays. At the time, I don’t appreciate the really lovely guitar lick and the hypnotic bass line – or the wonderful way in which the singer of the Passions (‘where are they now?’) bends his note to sound out the phrase – ‘she moved me.’

I heard it again the other day; just randomly on the radio. It transported me back and left me thinking, what a really nice tune. Play it again.

Blimey, I don’t think I’ve heard this since I was about 12.

I remember similarly heady school discos, aged 14 too. Wonderful stuff. Have you heard the Pet Shops Boys version of this song with Sam Taylor-Wood? That’s very good too. I think it came out last year and it is on Spotify.

Great song. One of the classic examples of a one hit wonder. At least, I can’t for the life of me remember anything else by the Passions.

A big favourite of Mrs E by the way.

Not heard the Pet Shop Boys version, I’ll look it up.
