Sportsnight Preview

by Charlie_East_West on March 26, 2013

Tomorrow evening, All That’s Left will begin a major new sports feature. It is called Sportsnight and it will showcase some of the greatest sporting moments – both past and present. This will become a regular Wednesday night feature on All That’s Left.

As I am sure some of you sports fans will remember, Sportsnight was a Wednesday evening midweek sports programme on BBC1, that ran from 1968 until 1997, normally hosted by David Coleman, Frank Bough or Harry Carpenter. The show acted as a midweek version of Grandstand, and it covered a round up of the midweek sporting highlights – in particular, midweek football action such as international matches and FA Cup replays.

These were the golden days of BBC Sport sporting broadcast rights (pre-Sky monopolisation). It meant that the BBC had carte blanche access to the sporting landscape.

As well as football, the programme covered most sports within a one hour schedule. Basically, they could show whatever they damn well wanted to, and so whether it was football, boxing, or even bobsleigh – we were all treated to a wonderful mix of sports packaged up perfectly for a Wednesday night treat.

This was the era of a less complicated, more innocent world before pay for view sports. It was the age of fights in smoke filled halls, snooker players drinking 10 pints per match, FA Cup relays on a mud bath in Huddersfield, or a Greyhound final from Wimbledon.

The programme also had one of the great sporting theme tunes of all time. Back in the 1970’s and 1980’s the BBC knew how to give good sporting theme tunes – such as Grandstand, Rugby Special, Ski Sunday and Match of the Day.

We aim to please on All That’s Left, and we will present our own regular sports feature on a Wednesday night – featuring some of the most momentous sporting broadcasts of all time, combined with lesser known sporting moments, or just a sporting clip from something that we find amusing from the world of sport.

So from tomorrow night we will say, in the immortal words of Harry Carpenter:- “Good evening, and welcome to Sportsnight. Our main action tonight features…”

Wednesday night is Sportsnight on All That’s Left.

Every Wednesday night, eh, Chas?

So the missus has gone out to her consciousness-raising class (or at least, that’s what she tells you) and you’re going to post an instalment as a reward to yourself for getting the bairns to bed, eh…?
