#301: 1968, The Velvet Underground, The Gift

by Jackie_South on October 7, 2011

Ah! What could be sweeter than Lou Reed‘s whimsical tale of a love-struck student in Pennsylvania who decides to post himself to his girlfriend in Wisconsin to avoid the cost of a ticket?  All the better if such a sweet story is delivered in the melodious but deadpan Welsh accent of John Cale?

I remember first hearing this on the stereo in my school sixth form common room, shortly after one of my friends had, with great ceremony, burnt someone else’s Terence Trent Darby tape that had previously been in there and put The Velvet Underground‘s White Light/White Heat on instead.

Oh, and I like this video done by an art student to go with the song too (the song itself starts after 30 seconds).

A touching, if somewhat cautionary, tale.  Don’t try this one at home kids…

As you’ve picked a song being performed (ostensibly) by a Welshman – I’m hoping that George will continue that theme and we can have a Welsh artists theme!
