#270: 2000, Lambchop, Up with People

This is a lovely song from a lovely album. I first heard it lying in bed with my young wife listening to The Late Lounge on Jazz FM with Rosie Kendrick – I remember the guitar that gently drove the song and the soft gravel voice of Kurt Wagner as he tells us in whispering tones that We are screwing, up our lives today.

The song builds very subtly with a background of gospel and horns, it is all done so gently so subtly and therein lies the charm of this wonderful song. Zero 7, re-mixed it with great success a couple of years after its release, but I’ve gone for this stripped down version, because I love it’s softness, which I think does more for the provocative lyric.
