King of the Mountains Award 2010

by Ray_North on January 3, 2011

Our last award – the award for that person who has come from nowhere and soared to great heights during 2010. And, in a World Cup year  the awards goes to a forward who lit up the World Cup: he scored goals, he worked tirelessly for his country and he won and lost with dignity and humility – all the things that we at Allthatsleft applaud (please excuse my foray into pomposity).

The winner of this years King of the Mountains is – Uruguay striker Diego Forlan.

Forlan first came to my attention when he signed for Man United and was promptly rubbish against everyone except Liverpool, where suddenly, evoking the law of sod, he scored a thirty yard screamer to secure a win at Anfield. But that wasn’t enough and the prawn sandwich eating home counties Man United fans got on his back and Fergie lost patience and sold him to Villareal in La Liga, where he has been outstanding averaging a goal every other game.

It is in the World Cup though that Forlan showed what a world class player he is – he chipped in with five goals (see this corker here against the Germans), which won him the Golden Boot, loads of assists and was by far the most consistently dangerous and dignified player of the tournament.

You may look a bit like Sally Gunnell, but we salute you Diego Forlan.
